Splint Hero Story: Kirsten Alting – Back on Stage Thanks to Silversplints

My name is Kirsten Alting. I'm a singer and songwriter in the country americana genre, living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome – a connective tissue disorder that turned my life upside down for years. I was bedridden for a long time, my body wouldn’t cooperate, and even simple activities like making music or writing caused pain and frequent dislocations in my fingers. My joints are hypermobile and unstable, making even the smallest movements difficult and painful.

On the advice of my doctor, I was referred to a hand specialist. When she saw how unstable my hands were, she immediately said I would benefit greatly from a full set of Silversplints. And she was right. The prospect of less pain and more stability gave me hope and the strength to rebuild my life.

Silversplints support my hands and wrists without limiting my freedom. I don’t wear them while performing – they can get caught in guitar strings or make noise on piano and flute – but in everyday life, they protect my hands and prevent overuse. That’s what allows me to make music again — a passion that once felt out of reach.

The splints are not only functional, they’re also stylish and unique. They feel like an extension of myself. Just like my assistance dog, they’ve become a recognizable part of who I am — both as a person and an artist. On stage or in interviews, people often ask about them. What used to be a medical aid I wanted to hide is now a powerful symbol of my journey and resilience.

Since wearing Silversplints, I experience far less pain, almost no dislocations, and I’m able to perform daily tasks again: writing, holding things, taking care of myself. But most importantly, I can make music again. The splints give my hands the rest and stability they need off stage, so I can shine on stage.

Silversplints combine functionality with elegance. For anyone with hypermobility or joint instability, they can truly make a difference. They don’t just support your body — they boost your confidence and independence. To me, they are a symbol of strength, recovery, and perseverance.

Give yourself the support you need — even if it feels daunting to stand out. At first, I found it hard: silver splints on your fingers are very visible, especially on stage. But now, I see them as jewelry with a purpose. Get expert advice and choose custom-made splints. The difference in comfort and effectiveness is enormous. And most importantly: don’t see them as a limitation, but as a way to do what you love again.
